Chicago Bears Redeem Themselves Against Steelers
Hopes were very high for the Chicago Bears before the start of the 2009 season. Having acquired a stud quarterback in Jay Cutler, the Bears were ready to eliminate and overcome the one major question mark that may have weighed them down over the past few seasons. Kyle Orton and Rex Grossman were average quarterbacks at best, and diminished the effectiveness of an amazing defensive unit and a great running game, especially after the emergence of Matt Forte.
The biggest obstacle the 2009 Bears may have faced was at the wide receiver position, but Devin Hester and Earl Bennett were adequate enough with the presence of Jay Cutler, not to mention Greg Olsen, a strong, developing force at the tight end position.
The Bears opened up the 2009 season with a visit to Green Bay to face the Packers on Sunday Night Football. Expectations for this game were very high, and some even favored the Bears to win. Unfortunately, the team collapsed during this game, much of it stemming from the ineffectiveness of Jay Cutler, who threw a total of four interceptions during this game.
On top of this was the injury of Pro Bowl defender Brian Uhrlacher, injured for the entire 2009 season. This is a crippling blow to the Bears.
Cutler redeemed himself in the team’s second game. Facing the defending Super Bowl champions, Cutler and the Bears looked like a different team out there, finding their way to a 17-14 victory over the Steelers, highlighted by a 4th quarter comeback that saw the team score 10 points.
This was a nice way for the team to redeem itself, and the Bears suddenly have a clean slate going forward.

Chicago Bears Look Strong in 09
Chicago Bears have very high expectations for 09′ with the acquisition of Jay Cutler from the Denver Broncos. Jay Cutler had a terrible first game as starting quarter back for the Bears, and many believed that if this continued the Bears would be no better then an 8-8 team. Jay Cutler is the first pro Bowl quarterback for the Bears in many ages – while the bears base their team on defense and running the ball, that mentality won’t get them a Super Bowl ring only.
Jay Cutler has a bit of the “Favre” gun slinger approach – meaning he think he can make any throw at any time to his wide receivers. It will be interesting to see how well Jay Cutler protects the ball and limits his interceptions this season. Will he try to make the spectacular play or the smart play?
The loss of Brian Urlacher was devastating to the Bears defense – he is the quarterback of the defense. With his loss, the rest of the Bears defense must raise their game to a whole new level if they expect to compete for a division title. The Minnesota Vikings might be the favorite to come out of the NFC North – the Bears have a chance to be there as well at the end of the season. With the exception of facing the Detroit Lions, every game the Bears play against the Vikings and Green Bay Packers should be well contested.
WR Devin Hester must elevate his wide receiving skills to the same level his kick returning skills once were. Hester was one of the greatest return men of all time and if he could translate that to the wide receiver position, Cutler to Hester will be the norm all season.
RB Matt Forte will get the majority of the carries this season for the Bears. In this day and age in the NFL, typically one RB can not carry the entire load the whole season so look RB Garret Wolfe and RB Adrian Peterson to give Forte a break once awhile.

Chicago Bears 2006 Preview
The Chicago Bears had a great season in 2005. They finished 11-6 and went to the playoffs. Their one problem was scoring. Many in the media have touted the Bears as the NFC North champions. Are they correct? Let’s take a look at the 2006 Chicago Bears. Fortunately for them, their division is not that tough.
Key Moves
One major move by the Bears was the addition of Brian Griese. The offense was up and down last season. Griese will be fighting for a job. He comes in as a backup, but if Grossman fails to impress, Griese could take the reins. Their defense loses a good player in Jerry Azumah. Despite being only 28, he had to call it quits. His body got the best of him.
Quarterbacks
One of the issues last season was the health of Rex Grossman. He’s expected to be healthy this season. Grossman could help the Bears offense soar. The signing of Brian Griese gives the Bears a solid backup. Even is Grossman goes down, they won’t experience a horrendous drop. Neither quarterback is upper echelon. The Bears QB situation is just above average.
Running Backs
The Bears are sitting pretty in the running game. Thomas Jones should have another great year. They also have Cedric Benson in the wings. The running game of the Bears is the offense’s strong point. Throw in the tough blocking Bryan Johnson and you have a ground attack that will eat up yards. Thomas Jones had 1,335 yards last season. As nice as that is, Cedric Benson is expected to be better when he’s ready.
Receivers
The receiving core is a bit lackluster. Sure, there’s Muhsin Muhammad, but he’s not getting any younger. Aside from Muhammad, there’s not too much to be excited about–yet. The young Bears receivers do have talent and could blossom into solid contributors on the field. Right now, the receiving core is just average.
Defense and Special Teams
Last season it was all about the defense. The Bears defense constantly made critical plays and kept their team in the game. The 2006 Bears defense is above average again. The best component of the defense is the linebacker unit. They are off the charts. The weak part of the defense is the secondary. Losing Jerry Azumah didn’t help any. The Bears did pick up cornerbacks Ricky Manning and Dante Wesley. The secondary will have to step it up in 2006. The special teams unit has its ups and downs. Punter Brad Maynard needs to have a better season. The Bears hope that Robbie Gould, kicker, was not just a one year wonder. On the plus side, the Bears did add a couple return men that could be home run type of guys.
2006 Prediction
It’s possible that the Bears win their division, because the division is weak. However, I believe they will be an 8-8 team. The schedule is not too tough, but it’s not the walk in the park it was in 2005. In 2005, the Bears had a 2-4 record against really good teams. This is why they faltered in the playoffs. They were not as good as their record indicated. In 2006, they have 8 games that look to be pretty tough, 2 that are middle ground and 6 that are against lower tier teams.

Washington Redskins – The Five Greatest NFL Teams in the History of Football
While a lot of people may contest and debate the five greatest NFL teams in the history of football as listed here, everyone will agree that these were awesome teams that deserve the honor and accolade one way or another.
1985 Chicago Bears
The 1985 Chicago Bears was a phenomenal team composed of a mismatched group with raw and exciting energy and interesting personalities. They were great and they knew it, recording their championship video, “The Super Bowl Shuffle” even before playoffs started. Led by the Mohawk-wearing quarterback Jim “Punky QB” McMahon and an impenetrable running and defense line, chief of them William “The Refrigerator” Perry, Super Bowl MVP defensive end Richard Dent, and NFL Defensive Player of the Year Mike Singletary, the Bears finished the season with a 15-1 record and scored a total of 456 to 198 points. During the playoffs they won 21-0 against the giants and 24-0 against the rams for the NFC title. They won the Super Bowl, scoring 46-10 over the Patriots.
1972 Miami Dolphins
The 1972 Miami Dolphins is the only NFL team that ever had a “perfect season,” with a season record of 17-0. This is also the reason why they are considered as the greatest NFL team of all time, particularly by the documentary America’s Game: The Super Bowl Champions, produced by the NFL Network. Their undefeated team was led by coach Don Shula and football greats such as Earl Morrall, Bob Griese, and Larry Csonka. They won all three playoff games and finally won the Super Bowl VII against the Redskins. Some argue however that the ’72 Dolphins had the advantage of playing one of the easiest schedules in the history of modern NFL, and this when equally matched with the ’85 Bears, they were no contender.
1962 Green Bay Packers
A dream team consisting of a list of football hall of famers including Paul Hornung, Max McGee, Jim Taylor, Boyd Dowler, and Vince Lombardi, the 1962 Green Bay Packers set a 13-1 record earning them a first place at the Western Conference. In the NFL Championship Game, they won 16-7 against the New York Giants, marking the Packers’ 8th NFL Championship.
1991 Washington Redskins
The 1991 Washington Redskins topped the NFL in two important stats: the yards gained per pass and yards allowed per pass, with star player Mark Rypien averaging a whopping 8.5 yards per attempt, gaining a total of 1,340 yards on 70 receptions. The additional contributions of Redskins’ Ricky Ervins and Earnest Byner with a combined 1,708 yards make their stats legendary. Even with a tough schedule, they were able to outscore their opponents 485-224.
1999 St. Louis Rams
One of the most exciting personalities in the 1999 season was then barely-known night-shift grocery-clerk and St. Louis Rams’ star quarterback, Kurt Warner who led the Rams to a record of 13-3 in the regular-season. He was both NFL MVP and Super Bowl MVP. The Rams defeated the Tennessee Titans in the Super Bowl XXXIV with a score of 23-16, and claimed their 1st NFL World Championship since 1951.

6 Fascinating Stories Behind the Names of Six NFL Teams
Have you ever seen any pirates while spending time in Tampa Bay? In all probably, you have not. The regional pirate legends influenced the team becoming the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. A special board reviewed 400 team name options, before settling on “Buccaneers.” Each NFL has a story behind its name. While the origin of some names is self-explanatory, others are more storied or obscure:
1. Chicago Bears
In 1921, the Decatur Staleys moved to Chicago, Illinois. Chicago already had a baseball team named the cubs. So owner George Halas chose “Bears” instead, as football is a much more rugged sport than baseball is.
2. Cleveland Browns
A man named Paul Brown served as the Browns’ first head coach and general manager. The original Browns team later moved to Baltimore (1996), becoming the Baltimore Ravens. Three years later (1999), a new Cleveland Browns emerged as an NFL expansion team.
3. Indianapolis Colts
The Miami Seahawks relocated to Baltimore, Maryland, in 1946. A man named Charles Evans won a name-the-team contest, by choosing the name “Colts.” Maryland is renowned for its racehorses, so why did Evans choose the term that refers to a young male horse? His argument was that the Baltimore football team would be the youngest team in the league. Furthermore, he noted that “Colts” was easy to say and include in the headlines of newspapers. When the team moved to Indianapolis in 1984, it kept the name.
4. Atlanta Falcons
The city of Atlanta, Georgia is not renowned for falcons. So, how was the team named after the regal bird? A teacher named Julia Elliot won a name-the-team contest for the new NFL team. Elliot noted that various adjectives accurately described the falcon:
o courage
o deadly
o dignified
o proud
o sporting
Thus, the new Atlanta NFL team would take off as the Falcons.
5. Green Bay Packers
The story behind the Packers’ name is certainly one of the most fascinating ones in the NFL. George Calhoun and Earl “Curly” Lambeau once talked in passing about forming a new football team. Within time, the idea became a reality. The employer of Lambeau, the Indian Packing Company, agreed to sponsor the team. They provided jerseys, football equipment, and a practice field. Due to the company’s contributions for launching the team, the name “Packers” was born.
6. Tennessee Titans
The Titans were figures in the mythology of ancient Greece, so how did they become linked to an NFL football team? After the team moved from Houston to Tennessee, the owner announced that the team would have a new nickname. He revealed that “Titans” was chosen because the Tennessee’s city Nashville was nicknamed the “Athens of the South.” During the 5th century B.C., Athens became ancient Greece’s primary city.
What is in a name? Regardless of the NFL team for which you cheer, knowing the team’s name will provide you with a better appreciation for the squad. Use official NFL merchandise to cheer on your favorite NFL team-whether it is the Bucs, Browns, or Bengals!

Through the Years – Looking Back at the Quarterbacks of the Chicago Bears
The Chicago Bears are one of the most storied franchises in NFL history. The team was there at the birth of the National Football League and though they have experienced up and down levels of success and failure, they have always remained one of the more popular teams in the league. The Bears have had some of the most famous players in the league throughout their history; Gale Sayers, Dick Butkis, Walter Payton, Mike Singletary, Richard Dent, Brian Urlacher, and more. One area though that the Bears have consistently struggled with is their starting quarterback. The Bears quarterbacks through the years have experienced varying levels of success, but even at their most successful, the team has rarely had a quarterback that would qualify as a superstar in the league.
In terms of individual success, the most successful quarterback in the history of Chicago Bears was Sid Luckman. Sid Luckman came out of Columbia University in 1939 and proved himself worthy of fan support during his entire twelve year NFL career. He would finish his career having led the league in passing yards and touchdown passes on three different occasions. Though his durability was sometimes in question, there was only one season in which he started every game the team played, his level of play never was. With Luckman at the Helm, the Chicago Bears would win four NFL Championships. To this day, he is still the Chicago Bears’ career leader in most passing categories.
Following Sid Luckman was a hard job, and that job fell on the shoulders of Johnny Lujack. Lujack was only in the league for four years and was only the starting quarterback of the Bears for three of them (1949-51). In his first full season as the Bears’ starter he led the league in pass completions, pass attempts, passing yards, and passing touchdowns. Three years later, he was out of the league and next up was future Pro Football Hall of Famer George Blanda. Blanda would go on to play twenty six seasons in professional football, but only the next few as the starting quarterback of the Bears.
The Bears would then gain a little more stability at the quarterback position when in 1955 the reins of the team were turned over to Ed Brown. Brown would remain the main quarterback of the Bears for six seasons before moving on to the Pittsburgh Steelers in 1962. Though Brown kept the job for six seasons, those seasons were far from the most successful in franchise history.
Chicago would return to the top of the league after this rough patch by working a trade with the Los Angeles Rams that would bring quarterback Billy Wade to the Windy City. Wade would be the starting quarterback for the Bears for just four seasons, but in 1963 he would help the team achieve a record of 11-1-2 and win the championship of the league.
Over the next seventeen seasons, from 1965 through 1981, the Chicago Bears would not have anyone be their primary starting quarterback for more than three seasons. The list of starting quarterbacks that would go through the Chicago Bears revolving door include Rudy Bukich, Jack Concannon, Virgil Carter, Bobby Douglass, Gary Huff, Bob Avellini, Mike Phipps, and Vince Evans. This long period of instability at the quarterback position would echo the team’s long period of ineffectiveness during this time. During this seventeen year stretch, the Bears only had three seasons with an above .500 record.
The 1982 season opened with a number of changes, the team was now under the leadership of head coach Mike Ditka, and starting at the quarterback position was the soon to be legendary Jim McMahon. The Bears would rebound from futility and in 1985 they flirted with a perfect record until the last game of the season. Though McMahon never led the league in any major passing category, he was an integral part of the team and helped to give them some of the attitude that made them one of the dominant football teams during the 1980s. As the 1980s came to an end, the Bears would transition Mike Tomczak from backup to starter for a year before handing the team’s starting quarterback position over to Jim Harbaugh. The first two seasons with Harbaugh at the helm, the Bears would record back-to-back 11-5 records before slumping to back-to-back below .500 seasons.
Following Jim Harbaugh’s tenure as the starting quarterback of the Bears, the team would again repeat their previous pattern of having a seemingly endless cycle of quarterbacks be put into the role of team leader. Starting games for them at the quarterback position over the next fourteen seasons would be Steve Walsh, Erik Kramer, Dave Krieg, Rick Mirer, Steve Stenstrom, Moses Moreno, Shane Matthews, Cade McNown, Jim Miller, Chris Chandler, Henry Burris, Kordell Stewart, Chad Hutchinson, Craig Krenzel, Jonathan Quinn, Kyle Orton, Rex Grossman, and Brian Griese.
Looking back at the history of the starting quarterbacks of the Chicago Bears it is easy to see that their most successful time as a team came during stretches where they had relative stability at the starting quarterback position. It isn’t necessary to win in the NFL to have a superstar quarterback, but being able to field a quarterback that has experience and is comfortable within the scheme the team runs is a must. As of right now, the Chicago Bears search for stability at the quarterback position continues.
